Kern County has the worst air in the nation according to the American Lung Association. HECA will add significantly to that air pollution with large quantities of NOx, VOC, SOx, PM10, and PM2.5 emissions.
NOx emmissions form ozone and fine particulates. VOC emmissions form ozone. SOx emissions form ozone and fine particulates. Ozone burns the lungs and debilitates those with any health problems like asthma or lung disease. PM10 and PM2.5 are fine particulates that damage the lungs and arteries from the inside out.
Everyone is affected by this pollution but the young, the elderly, the sick, and those who work outside, are hit the worst. These sensitive groups make up about two-thirds of our population.
